The m.o. of university administrations: divide competence until you can never be mad at anyone, because there are always so many others who can be blamed.

Learning the Consequences: State-dependent Modulation of Spontaneous Decisions in Flies

Description Lecture I gave at the Gatsby Charitable foundation workshop "Smaller Cognitive Systems" in London, November 2008. It's all about spontaneous behavior in the fruit fly Drosophila and how learning the consequences of spontaneous decisions can lead to habit formation even in flies. The mushroom-bodies in the fly's brain regulate habit formation and mediate this important step in determining the state the animal is in. This state ultimately modulates the decisions the animal will take.
